Welcome to the Black Hills!!!
Colorado families love the Black Hills! In fact in 2007, we counted more Colorado vacationers in the Black Hills than travelers from any other state. There are lots of great reasons why.
Mini drive...Mega vacation!
The Black Hills are closer to Colorado than you think. It's about 394 miles from Denver to Rapid City. A tank and a half of gas.
A 6 hour drive. A 70-minute airline flight. You can have breakfast at home and eat lunch in the Black Hills. Once you're here, you've got a full week of fun. The Black Hills is a very compact mountain range in southwestern South Dakota and it's become one of America's favorite vacation spots. We recommend a finding a single motel or a centrally located campground as your base camp. Then strike out on day trip loops that will fill your days and nights with fun and wonder.
You’ve entered the Black Hills & Badlands official website for vacation travelers, an information-rich on-line encyclopedia that contains info on 35 cities and towns, 15 maps, 30 kinds of outdoor fun, 190 fun-filled attractions, events by the hundreds, and more than 600 service businesses eager to host you.
Family friendly!
The Black Hills have more than 70 fun attractions that provide adrenaline rushes, animal adventures, wholesome competition and awesome fun that boys and girls will enjoy with their parents. Pan for gold. Explore a cave. Whistle up a prairie dog. Dinosaurs galore! Ride an 1880 train. Catch a big fat trout. There are plenty of grownup diversions, too, like golf, gaming, shopping and spas. Our advertising slogan, "Beyond All Expectations!" originates from what so many people exclaim after visiting here.
America the Beautiful
This is the home of Mount Rushmore, The Badlands and four other national parks. The Black Hills are compact region of gorgeous mountains, with all the things you'd expect from a western vacation: waterfalls, wildlife, scenic byways, gold mines, mountain lakes, granite crags and Ponderosa forests. The camping is superb in this woodsy, high-elevation environment...few mosquitoes and no wild bears at all. You'll find your favorite kind of outdoor recreation, too. Acclaimed trail systems for hikers, bikers and horses. Fly fishing for rainbows, browns and brookies. Rock climbing, The Needles or Devils Tower. Caving, ATVing, wildlife photography.
We're Old West, too!
This is the land of Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, Sitting Bull and Gall. A frontier wilderness explored by Jim Bridger, Jedediah Smith and George Armstrong Custer. The last big gold rush on the North America continent was here in 1876, leaving behind gold camps like Deadwood and Custer City and legendary characters like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Rodeo is our #1 spectator sport. And some of the biggest bison herds in the world roam free on Dakota parks and ranches.
This information-rich website has everything you need to plan and book a vacation trip in the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota.
We hope to see you soon, and often.
