HISTORY

Established during the gold rush of 1876, Deadwood began as a lawless camp of prospectors hoping to get rich quick. Its small business district consisted largely of saloons, card parlors, and bordellos. Deadwood became an outlaw hot spot and played host to some of the wild wests most famous names. Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, and Wild Bill Hickok all found themselves in Deadwood at one time or another.

On August 2, 1876, Hickok was shot and killed while playing poker at Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon. The hand he was holding was forever dubbed the “Dead Mans Hand”. Wild Bill Hickok is buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery along with several other notable wild west figures. The original site of Nuttal & Mann’s is located near what is present day 624 Main Street.

As the days of the outlaw came to an end, so did Deadwood’s reputation as a criminal hangout. With the arrival of the railroad, Deadwood slowly became more civilized it eventually grew into a prosperous commercial center.
