HISTORY

T-Rex discovered near Hill City
Stan the T-Rex

Like many other towns in the area, Hill City was established during the gold rush. It was founded in 1876, shortly after neighboring town Custer, making it the oldest existing town in Pennington County. In August 1990 the the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton – nicknamed Sue – was found in the area.

TODAY

Because of these amazing discoveries, Hill City has continued to evolve as an archeological, paleontological, and geological hub for Black Hills. While Sue is now on display in Chicago, Hill City has the second largest and most complete T-Rex on display. Stan, as it is known, can be found at the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research.

Small in Size, packed with history, and bursting with hospitality, Hill City is a favorite destination in the Black Hills! Near all of the top attractions and filled with shops, restaurants, breweries and wineries, and hotels. So come to the “Heart of the Hills”. You’ll be glad you did.
